Research, Policy & Advocacy

The Somali Women’s Development Association Inc. (SWDA) is committed to strengthening the voices of African Australian communities through research, policy development, community consultation, and advocacy.

SWDA works closely with community members, service providers, government, and key stakeholders to identify community needs, highlight emerging issues, and contribute to solutions that improve social inclusion, equity, and access to services.

Community-Led Research

Our research and advocacy work is informed by the lived experiences of refugees, migrants, women, young people, families, older people, and people living with disability. We focus on ensuring that community voices are heard and considered in the development of programs, policies, and services.

Focus Areas

Through community engagement, consultations, surveys, forums, and partnerships, SWDA advocates for improved outcomes in areas including:

• Settlement and social inclusion
• Employment and skills development
• Education and youth engagement
• Family violence prevention and support
• Mental health and wellbeing
• Housing and access to essential services
• Support for vulnerable and disadvantaged communities

Advocacy in Action

SWDA believes that meaningful change happens when communities are empowered to participate in decision-making processes. We continue to advocate for culturally responsive services, equal opportunities, and a more inclusive Australia where every person has the opportunity to thrive.
